BlenderMCP Setup Guide

Apr 11, 2026 · 4 steps

BlenderMCP connects Claude directly to Blender. Describe what you want, and Claude writes the Python to build it live - objects, materials, lighting, all from text.

What you need

  • Blender 3.0+ (free at blender.org)
  • Claude Desktop or Claude Code
  • uv (Python package manager)
  1. 1

    Step 1

    Install uv

    uv is the package manager that runs BlenderMCP. Open your terminal and run:

    macOS

    Terminal
    brew install uv

    Windows

    Terminal
    powershell -c "irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex"

    Then add uv to your PATH:

    Terminal
    $localBin = "$env:USERPROFILE\.local\bin"
    $userPath = [Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("Path", "User")
    [Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("Path", "$userPath;$localBin", "User")

    Restart Claude Desktop after this step.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Install the Blender addon

    1. Go to the BlenderMCP GitHub repo
    2. Download the addon.py file
    3. Open Blender
    4. Go to Edit > Preferences > Add-ons
    5. Click Install... and select addon.py
    6. Enable "Interface: Blender MCP" by checking the box
  3. 3

    Step 3

    Connect Claude to Blender

    Claude Desktop

    Open Claude > Settings > Developer > Edit Config.

    Add this to your claude_desktop_config.json:

    json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "blender": {
          "command": "uvx",
          "args": ["blender-mcp"]
        }
      }
    }

    Claude Code (terminal)

    Just run:

    Terminal
    claude mcp add blender uvx blender-mcp

    Done.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Start the connection

    1. Open Blender
    2. Press N to open the sidebar
    3. Find the BlenderMCP tab
    4. (Optional) Enable Poly Haven for free 3D assets and HDRIs
    5. Click Connect to Claude

    That's it. Claude can now control Blender.

What to try first

Once connected, try these prompts in Claude:

Prompt
Create a sphere with a metallic red material and place it on a wooden table
Prompt
Build a low-poly dungeon scene with a dragon guarding gold
Prompt
Point the camera at the scene and make it isometric
Prompt
Download a beach HDRI from Poly Haven and apply it as the background

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix
Connection failsMake sure the Blender addon server is running and MCP is configured in Claude
First command times outNormal - just retry. The first connection takes a moment
Complex scenes failBreak your request into smaller steps
Poly Haven acting weirdRephrase your prompt or try a different asset

Do not run uvx blender-mcp manually in your terminal. It starts automatically through Claude's config.
